      Learn More About Expansion Joints

If concrete slabs are sinking or settling, the end result can be catastrophic. You may notice the uneven concrete initially but damaged or broken expansion joints are also involved with sunken cement.

Expansion joints are attached before the concrete is poured and help to let the slab move and prevent stress on whatever it abuts. They are placed in places where the slab meets a building, slab meets another slab, or where a pool deck meets the coping.

Expansion joints are commonly used in sidewalks, driveways, patios, and other large concrete slabs. An expansion joint will allow some contraction and expansion of construction materials such as concrete.

When there are no expansion joints, concrete can buckle and crack. Due to these reasons, an expansion joint filler is added between joints to stop water from entering into the joint and under the slab.

Using polyurethane or wood placed in expansion joints as fillers can also have drawbacks. Since these materials are prone to damage from UV rays, they can't provide a proper seal for the expansion joint. When damaged, water can enter beneath the slab and cause erosion of the soil under the concrete.
